Public engagement

There is minimal reporting of the significant dumping occurring along our roadsides in beautiful watersheds so it is not designated a "hot spot"

One of the most significant factors in addressing litter and illegal dumping is citizen engagement. This is especially crucial in a community that prides itself on its environmental consciousness. The more citizens are involved, the greater the impact on our environment.

The attached map shows instances of illegal dumping reported to Contra Costa County, mostly via their mobile citizen app or website. The circles in red mark Pinehurst Rd in the Oakland Hills and part of the Upper San Leandro watershed. There is significant dumping off the road and into creeks, potentially unnoticed by vehicular traffic and bike riders. However, roadside dumping is a common sight. Despite the thousands of bikers/vehicles passing by, very few are reporting these issues. Your involvement is crucial in addressing these issues.

Since issues aren’t reported, Contra Costa County does not deem it a “hot spot.” Since it isn’t a “hot spot, "it does not get a first look at cameras and other pilot programs.

Illegal dumping in our watershed is a problem that affects us all. It's a reflection of our collective indifference. But we have the power to change this. By coming together as a community, we can make a significant impact on the litter/dumping situation in California and the Bay Area.
